A self-described “practical idealist,” Greg Guma, has written many books, articles and screenplays while editing and co-founding politically progressive periodicals. He has also directed nonprofits, owned and managed bookstores and earned a master’s degree in administration and planning from the University of Vermont in his home state.
In 2004, Guma co-founded and edited The Vermont Guardian, an independent weekly newspaper in Winooski. He edited and managed Toward Freedom, a progressive magazine about global issues, for a decade before that, at the same time directing an immigration rights organization in New Mexico from 1996 to 1997. In 2006, Greg Guma became the Pacifica Foundation’s executive director.
Guma says about Pacifica: “This is a radio community and, to some extent, a political community, so you can’t just look at it as a business.
I described myself as an anarcho-Buddhist. What I mean by that is that I believe in widespread distribution of power and wealth, cooperation, direct democracy and mutual aid, and the need for a fundamental transformation of society. That’s the “anarcho” part. But I also believe in nonviolence, tolerance, and a receptive, persuasive and non-attached approach to organizational leadership. Changing politics in this country and around the world is only part of what is needed. A change in the way we relate to each other and the natural world will also be necessary if we’re going to address the underlying problems facing the planet.
It’s time to wake up and start focusing on what really matters. It’s time to renew our purpose; to project responsible advocacy, real news and informed opinion about crony capitalism and imperial schemes, social justice and human rights; to celebrate our differences and our areas of unity; to realize the potential of this precious resource as a people’s medium, bringing sharp critique and a progressive vision to millions of listeners. It’s time to wake up the airwaves and shake up the world.”
